Eating an egg in poor condition can cause unpleasant digestive problems. To check if an egg is fresh there is an infallible test that will only take a few seconds.
Surely your grandmother knows this trick like the palm of her hand. And it is to know if an egg is fresh to be used – whether boiled, poached, fried, stirred or shaken – only requires a simple home test, indispensable if you have forgotten the date of purchase or if you do not keep your original box – or You bought it from a local farmer.
In the first place, it should be noted that if the eggs are already in a very deteriorated state, it is usual for them to give off a strong and annoying smell of sulfur. How to know if the eggs are fresh
The test is as simple as filling a glass or a cup of water to perform what is called a flotation test. That is, if the eggs are bad they will float. This phenomenon is related to the way in which moisture evaporates through the shell as the eggs age. As the humidity decreases, the air bubble inside the shell grows.
Another way to prove this is to hold the egg against your ear and shake it. If you hear the splash of the egg, it’s a bad sign. But if you gently place the egg in a glass or bowl of water, this simple test will give you an indication of the freshness of the egg. The air bubble will be at the narrow end of the egg, so you can know how much fresh the egg is by how it sits in the water.
If the egg is horizontal, it is at its coolest point. If the narrow end of the egg tilts upwards, the egg can still be used, but it is not as fresh. The latter is better for making meringue. If the egg is upright but still at the bottom of the container, it has already passed its peak of freshness, but it is still safe, being able to be baked or boiled.
