6 Predictions for WWE in 2019
We are in the third week of 2019 and we begin to see what can happen in WWE during the next 12 months. It’s something that I’ve never personally liked to do, but watching the latest movements of the company, I’ve convinced myself to move forward with an article with 6 things that could happen.
We do not intend to divulge hoaxes or information that does not exist, but we have created an opinion piece based on facts and we have compiled a list of fairly obvious and some riskier things. Will the WrestleMania main event be a women’s fight? Who will win the real male Battle?
6. WrestleMania stellar event 35
There is not a better chance than WWE has this year to put women in the WrestleMania 35 main event. It is something that has been talked about in recent years, a dream of many women who have repeated it ad nauseam, which has come at the least expected time and in the most natural way possible.
WWE has three superstars with a very high cache and it’s time to take advantage of it. We talk obviously about Raw women’s champion Ronda Rousey, Charlotte Flair and Becky Lynch. These three superstars were the center of attention of the company during the second half of 2018 and each one has taken its path; Charlotte is the queen of the ring in SmackDown, Ronda Rousey is the unbeaten beast of Raw and Becky Lynch has become the most beloved character of the moment.
In relation to the fight itself, I think it will end in a triple threat. A match between Ronda Rousey and Becky Lynch is a great idea, but Charlotte Flair is a life insurance and has accounts pending with both superstars, so I think it will finally be introduced. Many think that carrying out a triple threat is a symptom of weakness, but I see it more as a way to ensure that the combat is epic. It will be the first time we see something like that, and the company will play it safe.
And if we stick to the result, triple shot and advance a victory, Rousey Ronda. This will happen if Ronda finally stays in WWE until the year 2020. We already saw what happened with Asuka and it is likely that WWE does not want to repeat the experiment of removing the unbeaten Rousey to deflate. The Baddest Woman on The Planet is not Charlotte Flair or Becky Lynch, superstars who can lose a match and maintain their credibility.
What I have clear is that if this match is not the main event of WrestleMania 35, something incredible will happen with the other match, which will supposedly be the fight for the Universal Championship. Later you will see what I mean, but I insist that it must be something that leaves the audience with an open mouth, but it would not make any sense.
5. Goldberg will return to WWE
Bill Goldberg is one of the last claims of the old glories that remain in the current market. A man who lost almost all the interest in the last decade until he returned to WWE and broke all odds by beating overwhelmingly and unexpectedly Brock Lesnar in Survivor Series 2016. He continued his career playing a good role in Royal Rumble, winning the Universal title in Fastlane and falling defeated before Brock Lesnar in WrestleMania to close the circle.
The truth is that Goldberg silenced many critics, became a very valuable asset and that WWE knows. But other companies like AEW (All Elite Wrestling) also know it. Much has been said about the possible hiring of the former world heavyweight champion for the new project of Pro-Wrestling and even he himself has given some clue to his intentions by following AEW and related on Twitter. But let’s be honest, Goldberg is 52 years old, he’s an ‘old dog’ and he knows how to negotiate. For that reason, I think he is not going to play at this point and will return to WWE to match for the last time in his career.
The ideal scenario for this to happen is Saudi Arabia. Last year we saw how the sheikhs achieved the impossible by bringing Shawn Michaels back into the ring. Why not do the same with Goldberg? I think WWE’s current situation is not the same as it was two years ago because now he will pull the car with his talent. It’s something you need to do to finally close the torch pass. However, the scenario in Saudi Arabia is something totally different, that leaves the script and could become a place where legends also have a place.
4. Evolution 2 stellar event
WWE will continue to bet on its women’s division in 2019, and will even give it more space to stand out. The company not only will give more prominence to their female superstars but also open more options, especially with the coming into force of the Tag Team Championships and other trophies and belts that were still to come.
Evolution was the cornerstone of a project that has triumphed. In 2018 we saw one of the matches of the year between Charlotte Flair and Becky Lynch. It was a classic, the Last Woman Standing match that could happen again in 2019.
It has come to speculate with the possibility that WWE will hold two exclusive women’s events in 2019, so we would have Evolution 2 and another brand new event. I think Evolution should have continuity and become an annual classic, and that’s why I think a second edition will be held this year.
By that date, the women’s division will arrive at its best, much better than in its predecessor event. Charlotte Flair and Becky Lynch are being consecrated as legends, Ronda Rousey could increase his undefeated and maintain the streak until that show, Asuka has the option of maintaining his status and other superstars like Sasha Banks or Bayley could regain his place in the main event.
My prediction for the Evolution 2 event is that Ronda Rousey remains unbeaten and faces Asuka. It is likely that for is then SmackDown is already on FOX, so with a suitable Draft or Shake-Up, the match between the two superstars could be given.
3. The Return of Factions
WWE had the year 2018 full of good matches. And yes, I can guarantee it due to the comparison with the two previous years. So, why has the product lost a large following and has ceased to have an international interest? Obvious, for the storylines.
Last year was lacking in good stories, I could even say that there were none that were really worth it. WWE knows this and has devised a plan to re-create interest, recover the audience and make a slightly more developed product, as far as the script is concerned. It will also introduce more adult content, as we have seen in the last episodes of Raw and SmackDown Live with Alexa Bliss and Mandy Rose showing a bit of “meat”.
But do not worry, because WWE has more ideas than teaching chicha. At least, it’s what I hope to find in 2019. One of the easy ways to regain audience is with the frequent use of factions. At the end of the Ruthless Aggression stage, WWE had a problem with the stories and resorted to solutions like Nexus, a group composed of many talents wanting to eat the world. Something similar could be done with stables such as Undisputed ERA, which could have a determining role in Monday Night Raw or SmackDown after WrestleMania.
One of the superstars that will have a determining role in this regard is Kevin Owens. He is a big man and will come back strong, with a different aspect, but in WWE he needs someone at his side. It’s something we’ve already seen with Chris Jericho or Sami Zayn, perfect complements for an exquisite cocktail. I also see possible the return of the Wyatt family, in which Braun Strowman would have a place. WWE has kept Bray Wyatt in the fridge because he has expected his teammates, Erick Rowan and Luke Harper, to recover from their injuries.
2. Braun Strowman will not win the Universal Championship
No, I do not want to take advantage of the situation last Monday on Monday Night Raw, where Braun Strowman was eliminated from the match for the Universal Championship against Brock Lesnar at Royal Rumble.
Braun Strowman was one of the inventions of WWE in recent years, a toy that could be almost broken because of some decisions. It seems like all the members who left the Wyatt family were cursed and for some reason, despite having enviable qualities as far as characters are concerned, they never get to stardom. The case of Braun Strowman is different; Wyatt won the WWE title, at least.
An absolute championship is still resisting The Monster Among Men, a man who has made many merits to get it; has captured the attention of fans, has shown a good pace on Raw and has starred in countless spots to save more than one episode of the red brand show. However, Strowman always runs into reality at the height of his career.
I think, just like Bray Wyatt started his debacle from WrestleMania 31 with the loss to The Undertaker, Braun Strowman did the same in No Mercy 2017 against Brock Lesnar. That defeat came at its best and, despite being one of the figures of Raw in 2018, has never known how to recover from that blow. Lesnar is a wall for Strowman and that is one of the reasons why WWE has canceled the match. I also believe that, due to the number of incumbent opportunities he has been given and the fear of not knowing what to do with him as a champion, the creative team will not give him another starting chance in 2019.
1. Winner of the Royal Rumble 2019
And here comes the riskiest bet of all: the winner of the 2019 Men’s Royal Rumble Match. Obviously, this is a personal opinion and I can be wrong, but WWE has begun to send those kinds of clues that have some interpretations.
There are two pieces of evidence that show that my theory can be valid. The first, the clean victory of Dean Ambrose over Seth Rollins in WWE TLC. It was a move that left us a bit misplaced because Rollins is supposed to be Brock Lesnar’s opponent at WrestleMania. Many of you will think that removing the title was obvious, considering that it will occupy the position of the challenger to the Universal Championship, but I believe that such a defeat only devalues its status.
Nor am I saying that Seth Rollins is not going to fight for the Universal Championship and that my second theory is related to the loss of Ambrose’s Intercontinental title in the last episode of Monday Night Raw. Now that there is not a championship in between, I think both superstars have become the favorites of the Royal Rumble.
However, I think that the match at WrestleMania could become a triple threat, in which Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose would be participants. Who knows, The Shield banishing Brock Lesnar with a special appearance of Roman Reigns? Dreaming is free.
