After the unexpected action of Dolph Ziggler last week, WWE has confirmed that the United States Championship has become vacant. This week Daniel Bryan, general manager of the SmackDown brand, confirmed the action taken by Ziggler and announced that a tournament will be held to crown a new champion.
During the beginning of the show, Bryan confirmed that the strange act of now former champion Dolph Ziggler was taken as an unequivocal sign that the title was vacated. To crown a new champion, Bryan announced the celebration of a tournament, of which his first two fights were announced, which were Bobby Roode vs. Baron Corbin and Tye Dillinger vs. Jinder Mahal, with victories of Roode and Mahal.
Ziggler left the championship vacant last week, where after directing a few words, he declared that he would do something that people would remember, proceeding to retire while throwing the championship on the canvas of the ring. Prior to this Ziggler had won it in the Clash of Champions PPV, after surprisingly defeating Corbin and Roode themselves in triple threat.
