This was the first night in which the WWE Draft took place as in the upcoming episode of RAW it will be the second part. Before the show began, they aired the pool of superstars which were available to get drafted. We kicked off the actual episode of SmackDown with a match between Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns to declare which show would get the first pick. The Big Dog represented SmackDown while the WWE Universal Champion fought for the red brand.
As usual, both men delivered a good match and worked well together. Since the two superstars are agile and at the same time powerful, we saw different variations of counters. Rollins even countered a Spear into a Pedigree for a near fall. As he then got up and set up for the Stomp, the lights went out and suddenly “the Fiend” Bray Wyatt appeared and applied the Mandible Claw to the Architect. He then pulled Rollins into a hole in the ring and as then the lights turned on again, smoke went out of the hole. After that, the Universal Champion crawled back out of the hole into the ring while Wyatt just stuck his head out of the hole. The lights went out again and then we saw the Fiend standing on the stage in a strobe light.
So, this feud will likely continue while they counted this match as a victory by DQ for Rollins. We’ll have to wait for the draft if Rollins and Wyatt will stay in the same show since otherwise, both will have to look for a new feud.
Then the rules for the draft got explained. For two picks what SmackDown had, RAW had got three since their shows have a different length. Tag teams counted as one pick unless FOX or the USA Network wanted one specific superstar of a team. All undrafted wrestlers will have the chance to choose the show which they want to join.
Stephanie McMahon came out and said that she was disappointed that nobody booed. Then she announced the picks of the first round:
- Becky Lynch got announced as RAW’s first pick
- Roman Reigns was SmackDown’s first pick
- The OC with all three members Karl Anderson, Luke Gallows and AJ Styles joined RAW
- Bray Wyatt got drafted to SmackDown
- Drew McIntyre was selected by RAW
In light of this, the feud between Wyatt and Rollins is maybe over as the Architect will stay on RAW unless he loses his title in the next episode of RAW what is very unlikely.
Then we saw Renee Young hosting a panel at a table and she was joined by Booker T, Samoa Joe and Beth Phoenix as they talked a bit about the picks of the first round.
Then King Corbin made his entrance and held a small heel promo while he made his way to the ring. He faced Shorty Gable who really got introduced as this. Corbin was after about nine minutes able to perform the End of Days to get the win. I really don’t see where this feud should go and that the really officially gave Gable the name Shorty is awful.
Stephanie McMahon once more came on the stage to announce the picks of the second round:
- Randy Orton to RAW
- Sasha Banks to SmackDown
- Ricochet to RAW
- Braun Strowman to SmackDown
- Bobby Lashley to RAW
The draft of Sasha Banks will surely lead to a storyline with Bayley. Maybe at first as a team and then anyone will turn on one another, but we’ll have to wait and see for tonights title match between Bayley and Charlotte Flair as well as for the upcoming weeks.
Then the match between Braun Strowman and Tyson Fury as well as the fight between Brock Lesnar and Cain Velasquez for the WWE Championship got promoted. Both will take place at Crown Jewel.
Then Lesnar and Paul Heyman made their entrance and entered the ring. Heyman reminded the people that Valasquez bet Lesnar for the UFC Championship in the past and added that the Beast would conquer his nightmares of the past by beating Valasquez at Crown Jewel. As Heyman continued to speak, Rey Mysterio’s theme interrupted him as the master of the 619 and Valasquez came out. Mysterio said that they have forgotten to show some footage and then we saw shoots of Lesnar who bled after the beating which he took by Valasquez during their UFC match back in 2010.
Then Valasquez talked in Spanish and Mysterio translated it by saying that his partner will give Lesnar a matching scar on the other side of his face.
Quite a good segment, but I just can’t get hyped for this match since Lesnar’s matches are usually horrible and I’m not sure if he can work well together with Valasquez.
Then the New Day stood on the stage with two breast cancer survivors and talked about the fact that they are proud of them and in general about this topic. A nice little segment before they had a match against the OC. This six-man tag team match was quite short as not even after seven minutes Kofi Kingston performed the Trouble in Paradise to AJ Styles and then got the win for his team via pinfall. Maybe this is the start of a feud between these two great stables, but for that, the New Day would need to join RAW.
Stephanie McMahon once more appeared on the stage to announce the picks of the third round:
- Alexa Bliss to RAW
- Lacey Evans to SmackDown
- Kevin Owens to RAW
- The Revival to SmackDown
- Natalya to RAW
I’m quite happy to see KO back at RAW since I think that Heyman could truly find a good way to use him.
Then the picks of the last round of this night got announced by Stephanie McMahon:
- The Viking Raiders to RAW
- Lucha House Party to SmackDown
- Nikki Cross to RAW
- Heavy Machinery to SmackDown
- The Street Profits to RAW
Quite strange that Cross and Bliss got separately drafted to RAW. However, great to see the Street Profits in the main shows, but I truly hope that they don’t bury them as they have so much potential.
Next up was the main event of this show as the rematch for the SmackDown Women’s Championship between Charlotte Flair and Bayley took place. Bayley made her entrance with anew gear and shorter hair. Then she picked up a weapon to destroy inflatable tube men.
The match was quite good, and Bayley worked a bit like a heel. In the end, she was able to counter the Figure Four and rolled Charlotte up to pin her for the win. The Hugger then grabbed a microphone and said, “Hey bitches, srew all of you.” as she posed with the belt.
Logically, they want to bring the new character of Bayley over and give her the title, but to do it in the rematch is a quite bad timing. Besides, WWE just likes to increase the number of Charlotte’s title holds. Even though this episode was quite solid, the draft doesn’t seem to have such an impact due to the wild card rule since all superstars appeared on both shows. Hopefully, from now on they really seperate the two rosters to give the drafts a greater impact.
