On May 20, 2019 episode of Raw, “The Hardcore Legend” Mick Foley unveiled the brand-new 24/7 Championship to the WWE Universe, it was met with a massive amount of backlash.
Many believed it would fail miserably and be canned within weeks, yet here we are months later and it’s provided us with some of the most must-see moments in WWE every week. Below I will be highlighting the most creative and innovative ways the 24/7 Championship has been defended.
The Most Bizarre 24/7 Championship Defenses
August 5, 2019 – Monday Night Raw: OBGYN Office
One week prior on Raw, Maria Kanellis shocked the world when she pinned her husband Mike Kanellis to become the first-ever pregnant 24/7 Champion. She then proceeded to strut into the backstage area hoisting the title up, while daring any of the former champions to show up at her OBGYN appointment to try to take it away from her.
Little did Maria know, it was going to be her husband who took her up on her challenge when during a sonogram Mike laid on top of her and won the 24/7 Championship from his pregnant wife. The moment would be short-lived when Carmella and R-Truth were in the waiting room and Truth rolled up Mike to become an eleven-time 24/7 Champion
June 21, 2019 – Drake Maverick’s Wedding
Aw, what a special day, all your friends and family have gathered in support for your marriage it’s supposed to be the happiest day of your life right? Not for Drake! Two days prior, Maverick finally won the 24/7 Championship just in the nick of time for his wedding day.
Typically after the minister pronounces you husband and wife there would be a huge celebration, not on this day as Truth crashed Drake’s wedding and pinned him in the middle of the aisle to “get his baby back”.
July 15, 2019 – Monday Night RAW
Have you ever sat down and pondered on what would be the worst way possible to be interrupted in the bedroom? I bet Drake never saw this coming, as Truth appeared out of nowhere and pinned him before he could “consummate his marriage!”
June 15, 2019 – Airport Tarmac & Airplane
Prior to boarding the plane to Saudi Arabia, “The Modern Day Maharaja” Jinder Mahal rolled up Truth on the tarmac. Later on, during the flight Truth managed to pin a sleeping Mahal to reclaim the 24/7 title.
July 22, 2019 – Raw Reunion
Typically on special episodes that spotlight all the WWE Legends and Hall of Famers, many current superstars would have been slashed off live TV not this night. WWE made the wise decision to utilise a plethora of legends winning the 24/7 Championship such as Kelly Kelly, Gerald Brisco, Pat Patterson, and even “The Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase to name a few.
August 24, 2019 – Fox Founders Day Event
When I watched this online, it inspired me to write this whole article. Lately, the 24/7 Championship hasn’t been featured on TV like it was in the past. During the event “The Drifter” Ellias was performing one of his masterpieces when Truth came up from behind and pinned him.
Later that day, Truth was involved with a segment with several Fox Sports broadcasters. He tripped and bumped his head and Rob Stone appeared to be concerned for his well-being instead, he laid on top of Truth to win the 24/7 Championship!
It’s amazing to see something the WWE Universe initially hated, become one of the most entertaining segments on weekly programming. I am also digging how they are positioning Elias as the titleholder throughout the week and adding Truth and his goofy slapstick comedy when needed. Truth is a thirteen-time 24/7 Champion currently, I’m praying that when he makes it to sixteen he imitates and cosplays “The Nature Boy” Ric Flair.
The 24/7 Championship isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, and it’s brought back an Attitude Era-esque feel to the PG Era which is much needed these days.
