The superstars of the WWE know exactly what it takes to get a crowd all riled up and fully invested in a big fight. When a wrestler walks into the ring, he’s not just there to fight his way to the championship, he’s there to entertain. The world of WWE is made up of characters, and storylines. Each wrestler plays his part, each has his own story to tell. It’s no surprise then that we’ve seen many of these hulking specimens take the leap from the wrestling square to the silver screen.
Of course, success for the wrestler turned actor is not guaranteed. Hulk Hogan is a prime example of a highly entertaining wrestler who couldn’t act his way out of a paper bag. And although André the Giant is fondly remembered for his role as Fezzik in The Princess Bride, his film work is mainly made up of cameo appearances or size-related roles (he was 7ft4’). However, the selling power of the Hulk and Andre the Giant, and many other entertaining wrestlers has been put to good use in the world of online gaming. So, click here and go ahead and use your casino bonus Canada to play WWE-inspired slot games rather than watch a mediocre movie. But we’re not here to dwell on the wrestlers that should have stayed in the ring, we’re here to celebrate the ones that have become bona fide movie/TV stars.
Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson
Who doesn’t love Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson? Not only did The Rock become a huge fan-favourite in the world of wrestling, but he has also managed to become one of Hollywood’s best-loved movie stars. This a wrestler who has made it in the movie business thanks to a blend of natural charisma, intuitive comedic timing, and smart choices when it comes to the roles that he plays. From Disney’s Moana to the Fast and Furious franchise to the Jumanji reboot, Dwayne Johnson knows how to play to his strengths.
Dave ‘Batista’ Bautista
The Guardians of the Galaxy is a superhero movie with a sense of humour. Dave ‘Batista’ Bautista’s portrayal of Drax the Destroyer helped turn this former wrestler into one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s greatest assets. Bautista, like Johnson, is well-suited to the action-hero role, but his comedic timing gives him room to play less type-cast roles. When his turn as Drax comes to an end, it will be interesting to see whether or not Dave Bautista can maintain his upward trajectory in Hollywood. Again, like Johnson, much will depend on his choices.
John ‘The Doctor of Thuganomics’ Cena
It seems that the roles of wrestler and comedy actor complement each other particularly well. John Cena is yet another wrestler who has discovered a penchant for comedy, and he is particularly good at allowing himself to be the butt of the joke. Cena’s filmography already features plenty of notable works: Bumblebee, Ferdinand, Trainwreck, Sisters, and Blockers have all earned Cena the title of ‘actor’ as opposed to ‘wrestler pretending to be actor’.
Adam ‘Edge’ Copeland
Adam ‘Edge’ Copeland hasn’t quite made it to the big screen yet, but his notable television roles have earned him his place on our list of top four WWE wrestlers turned actors. Adam Copeland was forced to walk away from WWE after a severe neck injury. But rather than wallow in misery, Copeland forged a new career for himself as an actor. His blonde locks, chiselled features, and 6ft4’ stature makes him a perfect fit for the cast of ‘Vikings’. He’s also appeared in The Flash, Haven, and ‘Private Eyes’.
